Ellen Scheinberg completed her BA and MA degrees in history from Queen’s University and her Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa in 2007.
Dr. Scheinberg started her career in the heritage field as an archivist at the National Archives of Canada from 1990 to 2000. She then spent a year working for the Government of Ontario as an information management consultant. From 2002 to 2010, she served as Director of the Ontario Jewish Archives where she oversaw the acquisition of private and public records from across the province and undertook a number of ambitious outreach initiatives such as oral history projects, physical and virtual exhibitions, and historic tours. She also served as Senior Manager of Outreach and Partnership Development with the Archives of Ontario in 2011.
During her 25+ year career, Ellen has also made a name for herself in the areas of digitization, virtual exhibitions as well as other types of cutting-edge web products. She has delivered presentations and workshops, published many articles, and co-edited the award-winning book The Ward: The Life and Loss of Toronto’s First Immigrant Neighbourhood (Coach House Books, 2015). This work has spun off many other successful projects such as: book readings, local tours, exhibitions, and a series of sold-out cabaret performances directed by David Buchbinder at the following venues: Soulpepper Theatre (2016), Lula Lounge (2017), and the Berkeley Theatre as part of the Luminato Festival (2018).
Over the years, Ellen has chaired and served on a number of different committees, award juries and boards. She carried out two terms as a board member of the Archives Association of Ontario (1995-1997 and 2007-2009) and one term as a director for the Association of Canadian Archives’ Foundation (2007-2010). Most recently, she served as a director on the Heritage Toronto Board from 2015 to 2018. In that capacity, she served on committees and emceed a number of their plaque and programming events.
